Froome wrests maglia rosa from the shoulders of Yates with enormous solo ride
Stage 19: Venaria Reale to Bardonecchia, 184km
Sky's Chris Froome plunged a dagger into the hearts of his GC rivals to with a resounding solo win after stiking out 80 km from home to leap frog into the maglia rosa.
Froome finished the stage three minutes ahead of Richard Carapaz (Movistar) with Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) third and Miguel Lopez (Astana) Fourth. Most significant though was the arrival of defending champion Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) in fifth spot, 3'23" down. Froome now has a 40" lead over the Dutchman. Overnight leader Simon Yates plummeted and lost 38'51" on the day.
Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner and race leader Chris Froome said: ďI donít think Iíve ever attacked 80km from the finish in my career so far, riding on my own and going all the way to the finish. The team did a fantastic job to set that up for me. First we had to get rid of Simon Yates and then to ride away from Tom Dumoulin. To go from fourth to first, I wasnít going to do it on the last climb. Colle delle Finestre was the perfect place to do it. Gravelled roads remind me of Africa. Thereís another hard day tomorrow but the legs are feeling better and better as the race goes on.Ē
