Bennett victorious at Imola
Stage 12: Osimo to Imola, 214km
Sam Bennett goes full gas to double up in Imola
Bora Hansgrohe's Sam Bennett added a second stage win when the peloton reached a rain swept motor-racing circuit at Imola. The irishman beat Danny van Poppel (Team LottoNL-Jumbo) and Niccolo Bonifazio (Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team).
Stage winner Sam Bennett said: "I raced ahead in the final uphill section because I wanted to be sure to take the first descent and avoid inconveniences. The guys worked hard all day, the number one priority was to get to the sprint. I told him I would do it myself if necessary but it must have flown. I left early because there was a gap to close [with Matej Mohoric and Carlos Betancur in front]. I did not believe that the goal was still so far, fortunately I had more legs than others. At the moment point only to stage wins. I could not forgive myself to use energy for the intermediate sprints and then lose the final sprint but if the opportunity presents itself I will try to fight for the Jersey Cyclamen ".
Pink Jersey Simon Yates said: "When the group broke we were running ahead to pay attention. I heard on the radio that there was a gap but I did not know who was left behind and what the gap was. I heard that [Domenico] Pozzovivo was there but then he immediately returned to the leading group. The ending was more difficult than we expected. Nobody likes running in the rain but I trust the components of my bike, especially in the tires. "
