Yates eclipses the field to take lead in the Race to the Sun

Simon Yates took a memorable stage win to leap frog his way in to the race lead at the 2018 Paris Nice.

25 year old Brit Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) finished eight seconds ahead of Dylan Teuns (BMC Racing Team) and Ion Izagirre (Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team) to win stage seven in Valdeblore La Colmiane.

The results turned the GC on its head with defending race leader Luis Leon Sanchez plunging to to 26th spot after a disasterous day. Second placed Julian Alaphilippe dropped to 17th to perhaps mortally wound French hopes of a win.

Yates enjoys just 11 seconds of lead over Ion Izagirre with borther Gorka Izagirre just one second back. The final stage 8 is a lumpy 110km out and back from Nice and Yates will be under constant pressure.
