Démare takes victory in Paris-Nice opener

Arnaud Démare (Groupama - FDJ) outsprinted Gorka Izagirre (Bahrain Merida) and Christophe Laporte (Cofidis) for the win on the opening stage of the 2018 Paris Nice.

Meudon, Sunday, March 4th 2018– French champion Arnaud Demare started off where he started off last year - with a win on stage one of the Paris Nice.. In 2017 he kept the yellow jersey for three days and he'll be hoping ofr a similar if not better reusult his year.

On paper Demare was not a favourite given the final stretch was steep and cobbled, but he outpowered Spain's Izagirre and compatriot Christophe Laporte (Cofidis) in nail-biting final sprint. Belgium's Tim Wellens was a close fourth.
