UCI World Championships: Women Elite Road Race
Holland's dominance of the World Championships continued with a surprise win by Chantal Blaak.
Blaak, who rides for Boels-Dolman, took a solo win, finsihing 16 seconds ahead of Australian Katrin Garfoot ( ) with teammate Amalie Dideriksen in third. The win adds to Annemiek van Vleuten’s triumph in the Womens Individual Time Trial and Tom Dumoulins in the Mens Individual Time Trial.
Blaak's win came despite crashing earlier in the race whne she created a winning break with Audrey Cordon Ragot (France) and Hannah Barnes (Great Britain) with 23km left to race. The trio were joined by Katarzyna Niewadoma on the last climb of Salmon Hill then Van Vleuten, Garfoot and Van der Breggen. The last set of moves gave Hollnad three riders in the seven-woman breakaway. While the odds looked good, it was Blaak's final move the closed the betting on a Durch win.
“We didn’t really talk to each other before I attacked but we knew what to do," Blaak said afterwards. "There were three of us in a group of seven, and that meant we should attack and not wait for the sprint. Annemiek attacked first. Everyone reacted and I thought ‘this is a good moment.’”
“I don’t know what happened then, but they didn’t follow or they waited too long. We had really good teamwork, but it’s also a lot of pressure because when you are in the break you have to win.”
“I was already super happy that I had the national champion’s jersey this year, now I have the rainbow - it’s a dream come true.”
