Anniemiek van Vleuten takes gold in Elite Individual Time Trial with compatriot Anna van Breggen in silver for historic double.
The last time a country took first and second spots was France in 1996 whn jenaie Longo and Cathrine Marsal achieved the double in Lugano Switzerland.
Van Der Breggen starting second of the 54 riders set the time to beat with 20'02" at an average speed of 43.5km/h for the 21.1km course. While others came close it Van Breggen had to endure a long wait until Van Vleuten started to fifth to last before her dream of a gold medal was finally shattered. Van Vleuten's time of 28' 50.35" with a finshing margin of 12.16" was large enough to remove any agonies over what might have been ofr Van Breggen.
