Team Wanty-Groupe Gobert was once more livening up a stage with an early breakaway when Yoann Offredo attacked from the gun. His was a lonely effort before Elie Gesbert (Fortuneo-Oscaro) reached him with 3km gone. The pair then worked steadily to pull out a lead of 5.35 by km 60. It meant a long day in the spotlight as the race passed through the summer landscapes of the Dordogne. The pair were finally reined in with 7km to go as a headwind helped a chasing peloton pare back the lead.

While Lotto-Soudal drove the pack onward it was still Marcel Kittel with the strongest finish. The win further consolidated the German's lead in the points competition. Chris Froome still has an 18 second lead of Fabio Aru, with Romain Bardet at 51", but with some big mountains ahead with the upcoming Pyreneen stages.
