Porte wins Tour de Romandie 2017
BMC Racing's Richie Porte has won the five stage 2017 Tour de Romandie after claiming second place in the final Individual Time Trial to overtake overnight leader Simon Yates (Orica-Scott).
Richie Porte came second to stage winner Primoz Roglic of Team LottoNL-Jumbo in the final ITT in Lausanne to secure a dramatic last ditch win at the 71st Tour de Romandie. Roglic secured the stage win by eight seconds ahead of the Aussie, howver it was a further 34 seconds back to teammate Tejay Van Garderen, tied in thrid spot with Ion Izagarre (Bahrain Merida) and Fabio Felline (Trek-Segadredo).
Yates who started the day with a 30 second advantage over Porte could only manage 12th spot at 48" and saw his bid for glory slip gradually slip away over the 18.3km course.
Froome raises concerns
A major concern for Team Sky is the performance of Chris Froome who had earmarked the Tour de Romandie as a major pre-Tour de France test. Froome could only manage 9th spot in the timetrial and finished a dismal 18th on GC. He spectaculalry cracked on the 'Queen' Stage 4 from Domidier to Leysin. The stage was won by Simon Yates who outsprinted Porte to wrest teh lead from Feline who had led from the opening prologue.
In a post race interview he explained his feelings on the result:
