Michele Scarponi Killed in Training Crash

Michele Scarponi has been killed on a training ride this morning. He was in collision with a minibus at a crossroads and died at the scene. 

The Italian, a former Giro d'Italia champion had returned from the Tour of the Alps, having won the opening stage, and was on a early morning training ride. Medical services were on the scene very quickly but were unable to revive the rider.

37 year old Scarponi leaves his wife, and two twins sons.

Astana general manager Alexandre Vinokourov said in a statement: “We are in deep shock, it is a huge sorrow for all of us, for family, friends and colleagues of Michele.

“Michele Scarponi was a great champion. This is a huge loss, no words to express my pain. On behalf of the entire Astana Team my condolences go out to the family and friends of Michele Scarponi.”

Scarponi was due to lead Astana at the Giro.
