Olympic sign-up for Staffordshire Cycling Festival Olympic Gold Medallist, Joanna Rowsell will compete in Stafford’s inaugural cycling festival.

Rowsell, who won Gold in the Women’s Team Pursuit last year, is the latest pro-cyclist to sign up to the town’s first ever Women’s Grand Prix taking place on Friday the 9th of August. Meanwhile in the men’s field, Team Raleigh, led by Graham Briggs - former national champion and winner of last year’s GP - have also signed up to take part in Friday evening’s racing.

The now famous Stafford GP is the opener to a weekend of events and entertainment for cyclists. As part of the newly created Staffordshire Cycling Festival, two public sportives starting and finishing at Shugborough Hall will take place in the day time of Saturday the 10th August. These are open to all, with a shorter 35-mile ride and a 70-mile ride for those cyclists wanting a tougher challenge.

The festival will also feature a range of free entertainment including face painters, bicycle powered smoothie makers and more across the two days.

Olympic Gold Medallist, Joanna Rowsell said: “The Staffordshire Cycling Festival is set to be a fantastic event, and I’m really looking forward to taking my place in the Stafford GP. “Events such as this are a great way to get communities cycling and promote a healthy, active lifestyle. I would strongly encourage anyone with an interest in cycling to take to their bikes and sign up to one of the sportives and get involved in the local ride action this August!”

Staffordshire Cycling Festival organiser Paul Rowlands said of the sign-ups: “We are absolutely delighted that Joanna will be part of a really strong women’s field and it’s great to see team Raleigh back to defend their title in the men’s race. “We have already been overwhelmed with the interest people have shown in the Festival, and to have an Olympic Gold Medallist sign up is incredible. I hope Joanna’s presence inspires people to come down and get involved over in Stafford and up at Shugborough”
