Team TIBCO’s Claudia Haeusler clinched a 2nd-place finish in Stage 3 of the Giro Rosa this morning, moving into 2nd place in the General Classification standings behind World Champion Marianne Vos. World-class climber Haeusler won the Giro in 2009 and is a race favorite coming into the 2013 Giro.

“I'm happy with today and I think this put me in a good position for the next stages,” said Haeusler. “This was the first stage of making the GC, so now we know a little more about everyone.”

Today’s 111.6-kilometer race was the first mountainous stage of the Giro, shaking out the GC standings. Starting in the town of Cerro al Volturno in Southern Italy, Stage 3 opened with a long and steady-grade Category 3 climb. After completing a relatively flat circuit, riders closed out the race on a demanding, double-peaked Category 2 climb in the final 40 kilometers. Haeusler came in 2nd on the day, behind Vos who won Stage 3.

“I think the race is still open and there are more hard climbs coming,” said Haeusler.

Haeusler is 1:13 minutes back from the leader in the GC standings.

Tomorrow's Stage IV features 137.2 kilometers of rolling terrain from Monte San Vito to Castel Fidardo.
