Mountain Kings by Giles Belbin
Book: Mountain Kings, by Giles Belbin - a first look
Mountain Kings is a first book by former DP writer Giles Belbin and is a very readable guide to many of the greatest climbs of the Tour de France, combining history, technical insight and the personal experience of riding these iconic peaks.
Belbin has chosen 25 of the Tour's best known ascents, from the Col d'Aspin to the Col du Galbier, and has not only provided a biography of each together with profile graphics, but climbed each one to give a first hand account of what it is to suffer and ultimately conquer some of the toughest tests in sport. Alongside stories of the climbs and their place in Tour history Belbin has included profiles of the most influential, colourful and occasionally notorious riders who made the Tour a source of enduring fascination. Belbin's own experiences will hopefully inspire to do the same but many who have tackled the same climbs will recognise and understand the respect he has for these unforgiving slopes.
The book's format makes it a perfect travel companion. At 23.6 x 16.6 x 2 cm it can slip into a bag to take on holiday or down to the cafe. But with the Tour now underway and the peloton heading towards the home of these peaks it makes a great armchair companion to watching the racing.
A full review will follow soon.
Mountain Kings is published by Punk Publishing and is available from various outlets including Amazon, RRP: £16.95
