Giro d'Italia Offical Highlights Video (Italian):

As it happened over the last 50km:

It is hard to appreciate we are only two weeks into the Giro. The wet and cold conditions have been so taxing that many riders will be feeling they have already reached the end. They will certainly be longing ofr Monday's rest day. Before they can do that they have the small matter of Mont Cenis and the Col du Galbier to deal with. Fotunately the weather for now is dry and sunny, though it is predicted to turn for the worse at about 17.00 CET. It should be enough to get to the revised finish in time. Originally teh organisers were so concerned over weather conditions that both Mont Cenis and the final climb to the Col du Galbier were due to be omitted. The weather forecast has proved to be more favourable but as precaution the race will finish 4km short of the summit at the monument to Marco Pantani. Temperatures are pretty low at the top, down to minus two degrees.

1. Visconti (MOV)
2. Betancur (ALM)
3. Niemiec (LAM)
4. Majka (TST)
5. Duarte (COL)

Finish: Giovanni Visconti WINNNNNSSSSS!!!! Bravo!!

Just a hundred or two metres to go - Visconti is on the limit with 150m to go.

0.6km to go : Visconti don't look back! Just keep going for heaven's sake.

A valiant Rabottini is caught by a big group of chasers

1.0km: how Visconti is suffering on this beast of a mountain, the first time the Giro has been up here. This is the hardest steepest section. it is hard to be objective./p>

Nibali attacks - it isn't much, but it tests his rivals. Bentancur responds, Cadel Evans grinds on and makes contact.

2km: Visconti has been in a break for 97km. It would be so cruel now if he did not make it to the finish, but there are so many riders in the gap between the Italian and and the maglia rosa.

3km to go: The conditions are bleak for everyone, snow banks on either side. Visconti is not losing real time which is amazing, though a real threat could be Kelderman.

With the hairpins Visconti can look down and see his rivals. it is much easier to see them for him to see him. Sanchez is making headway but does he have enough time.

3.8km to go: the peloton is just grinding on. There are no real threats to GC so it is just a matter of keeping a lid on rivals perhaps.

5km to go: and it's Samuel Sanchez who goes with Daniel Caruso! Will it be enough to catch Visconti. The gap between Visconti to the peloton is still 2'20 plus and he is gaining time on all the chasers.

6km to go: The climb will not get easier - 8, 9 to 11% for Visconti, Rabottini at 53" and the chasers. The question is will the peloton spring into action - Uran, Nibali, Evans, Bentancur? Lots of Astana and five Sky riders.

Now it is rain, soon it will be sleet then snow - a real meterological lesson. Low body fat, the easier to climb, the colder you get.

Wilco Kelderman of Blanco has attacked the peloton.

8.4km: Visconti is still strong, but 38" to the three chasers - first Rabottini at 41", then a big gap to Pirazzi and Weening.

9.0km to go: it is colddd! No more sun, snow covered slopes. It is snowing on the finish line.

11.3km to go: the peloton is being attacked but the real action is up front. A moment of confusion meant that Pirazzi didn't react nor did Weening so Rabottini was gifted an opportunity.

12km to go: Rabottini has made an attempt to bridge the gap. Visconti has 50" over the Pirazzi group, 2'13 over Gesink, 2'51" over the maglia rosa.

13.3 km to go for Visconti. 13.5km average 5.8%, maximum 11%. For those of you who have done the Marmotte and Etape du Tour he doesn't have the final push to the top. The race will stop 4km short.

16.3 km to go. Everyone is over the top of the Telegraph, a descent and noting but a long cold bleak ascent to the finish.

20km to go: Visconti is pressing on alone, chased by around 12 riders in various groups, then the peloton. The descent to the foot of the Galibier won't be much help, not that long and not that technical

Movistar's Jose Herrada attacked from the peloton

Visconti now has 1'37" over Pirazzi et al, 2'13" over Robert Gesink's group, then 2'36" to the peloton. No doubt it will be closed down by the peloton, if there is anything left of it. All these attacks are depleting it, but none of the attackers are a threat to Nibali.

Attack: Giovanni Visconti has gone. It seemed Pirazzi was the stronger but so far not so.

The state of play is this: Pirazzi, Weening, Rabottni and Visconti in the race lead, folowed by a couple of others from the orignal break. Then Gesink, Henao, Kiserlovski and Martinez, then Di Luca on his own, then the Astana led peloton.

Gesink and Martiniz has beeb caught by Henao and Kiserlovski.

The peloton is now down to about 30 riders. It may wellbe whitled down a lot more as an Ag2R rider and Daniel di Luca make a move.

25km to go: Pirazzi and Weening have now been joined by Visconti and Rabottini.

Attack: Sergio Henao (Sky) has attacked the peloton, perhaps trying to redress his own tumble to 13th overall over the last couple of days. Robert Kiserlovski has joined him along with one other, Francis De Greef.

26.9m to go: the break is disintegrating under an onslaught by Stefano Pirazzi. Only Peter Weening can go with him. The Col Du Telegraph has has valuable points for the Mountain competition which Pirazzi leads.

Attack: Robert Gesink (Blanco)has made a big effort but he can't quite snap the cord. He has a lot of incentive after suffering badly yesterday in the rain and fog.

Astana is pushing the pace but the break isn't giving up.

30km to go: the peloton is now pushing hard up the Telegraph and the result has been a dramatic loss in the break's lead and now it is under 2 minutes. The climb is 11.8km long at an average grade of 7.4%.

40km to go: riders are grabbing food and preparing for the climb. Camera shots form the top are showing heavy snow coverage. It's like mid-winter. Meanwhile the break is having its lead whittled down - now 4'53". It is still seven riders, partly because the priority seems to be to get some sustenance in.

44km to go: the break and peloton are now racing to the foot of the Col de Telegraph. It has always been described as a climb in its own right but when you have the Galbier ahead of you it feels just part of a really big climb. If it helps psychologically then so be it.

CET 16.01, 50km to go: Currently seven riders are up front with a lead of 5' 44": Stefano Pirazzi and Francesco Bongiorno (both Bardiani Valvole), Robinson Chalapud (Colombia), Pieter Weening (Orica-GreenEdge), Giovanni Visconti (Movistar), Matteo Rabottini (Vini Fantini) and Miguel Angel Rubiano (Androni Giocattoli).
