Peter Sagan apologises for pinching Maja Leye's backside on the Flanders podium

Peter Sagan walked off the podium at the Tour of Flanders on Sunday straight into a social media storm after he pinched the bottom of podium girl Maja Leye. Ms Leye was presenting Fabian Cancellara winner with a kiss when Sagan pinched her, a cheeky grin, on his face. The reaction from certain quarters was immediate.

Michael Hutchence, a former Commonwealth Games cyclist was quick to chip in with "Shame that Peter Sagan has so much class on a bike and so very little off it."

Sagan later issued a video apology on his Facebook page:

Sagan wrote on his facebook page, "Was not my intention to disrespect women today on the podium. Just a joke, sorry if someone was disturbed about it."

Ms Leye, who will no doubt have to share the podium with Sagan before too long if his current form holds good, accepted the Slovakian's apology.

Peter Sagan will now want to put this incident behind him and prepare for his next race, the Amstel Gold
