2013 Paris-Nice
Mar 5: Paris-Nice, Stage 2: Vimory - Cérilly, 200.5 km
Yellow Jersey holder Nacer Bouhanni crashes out, Marcel Kittel (Argos-Shimano) outwits rivals to take stage. Second place Elia Viviani (Cannondale) takes over as race leader.
Overnight leader Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ) crashed out of the Paris Nice today. Bouhanni, who took over the race lead at the end of stage 1, came down in one of the small villages after either hitting a white line or skidding on something on the road. He sustained injuries to the face and hand and was forced to abandon. The stage was won by Marcel Kittel outsprinting Elia Viviani and Leigh Howard (Orica-Greenedge).
Bouhanni's crash, at km 143, was one of a number of incidents suffered on the 200.5km stage as a tightly packed peloton raced into a headwind as it headed almost due South. A report from the race doctor stated, "Nacer has a deep wound in the lip and a hand trauma. He's staying with us until the end of the stage and then going to hospital for further checks." Earlier, at km 125 a big crash brought down Ian Boswell (SKY), Alexandre Pichot (EUC), prologue winner Damien Gaudin (EUC), Geoffrey Soupe (FDJ) and a few BMC riders. Pichot later abandoned.
Viviani's second spot was enough for him to take the race lead with a 7" lead over Sylvain Chavanel (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) with Damien Gaudin (Europcar) just a second further back in third. He is the thrid race leader in so many days. Damien Gaudin surprised a quite few pundits by taking the prologue on Sunday while Bouhanni's stage win on Monday saw him take over the race lead. With Bouhanni and Gaudin going down Vivianni will no doubt be hoping there isn't a race leader's curse at work.
Stage 3 is 170.5km between Châtel-Guyon and Brioude. It is a fairly lumpy course with a 733m Cat 2. climb to Cote de Mauvagnat 15km form the finish.
