Cowbells set to ring on Sunday at SoCalCross

On Sunday, September 30, the SoCalCross Prestige Series lifts off once again for another year of mud, sweat and tears — as well as raucous fun and intense racing excitement — with Fairview Park in Costa Mesa, California, serving as the launching pad for the 2012-13 schedule.

Round one is “CX in the OC,” an American Bicycle Racing (ABR) sanctioned event that kicks off at 9:00 a.m. with Junior Men, Junior Women, Youth Under 10 and First-Timer Fun Race athletes taking to an interesting 1.75-mile course featuring a flat, fast grass start, ride-up/step-ups, a BMX-like bowl and roller section, barriers, a sand pit and more — typical cyclocross racing fare, but with a flare. There’s a class for all racers at some point during the day. There will also be a Beginner’s Clinic at 8:00 a.m., a Race Day Expo, a Family Fun Ride on the adjacent Santa Ana River Trail, and so much more.

On-site registration starts at 7:30 a.m., but the best way to get signed up is on-line through Athletepath, accessible through the series website: Southern California Cyclocross. This partnership eliminates typical “convenience charges”; all registration fees are included in the listed price. It’s quick, it’s easy.

While you’re there, take a hard look at the special multi-race deals on offer. A 10 Race Pass will automatically register a rider at a reduced rate for half of the standard races throughout the SoCalCross Prestige Series this year. Considering there are 20 race days over 14 weekends at locations from San Diego to San Luis Obispo this season, a competitor could save considerable coin with this deal. Note that our UCI-sanctioned events are not included in this package, nor are the C, Junior and Youth classes.

So the wait is almost over. We hope to see you in Costa Mesa, and at every event over the next few months! SoCalCross has some phenomenally cool things going on this season, and we’d love for you to be a part of it.

The Prestige Series has many sponsorship opportunities available, and volunteers are welcome at every event. Currently, official sponsors for 2012-13 SoCalCross are: Voler Team Apparel, SPY Optic, Shimano, Square One, Jenson USA, Rock N Road Cyclery, Cynergy Cycles and Cadence Collection.

ABOUT THE SERIES: Cyclocross is a historic form of bicycle racing that typically takes place in the autumn and winter. It is a timed event consisting of multiple laps of a 1.5- to 2-mile course consisting of pavement, wooded trails, grass, hills, sand, mud and obstacles requiring the rider to quickly dismount, carry their bike, and then remount. The SoCalCross Prestige Series was launched in 2006 and has grown over 500% in terms of participation since its inception to become one of the nation’s leading cyclocross racing organizations.
