Marian, MIT win team omniums at Collegiate Track Nationals

The 2012 Collegiate Track National Championships concluded tonight with Marian University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology taking convincing wins in the Division I and II team omniums.

Going back to campus with the individual omniums were Marian’s Colton Barrett with 440 points and Colleen Hayduk of the Kutztown University of Pennsylvania with 444 points.

TEAM OMNIUMS

With 11 victories over the course of three days, Marian defeated Midwestern State University 1190 to 824 while the University of Colorado in Boulder finished third with 788 points.

Three wins and several other noteworthy results scored MIT 949 points and the top spot in the standings over second place school Colorado Mesa University, which tallied 898 points. Finishing third in Division II was the US Military Academy with 838 points.

TEAM PURSUITS

The team pursuits were contested during the final day’s morning session. In the men’s event, the Marian foursome of Matt Gittings, Weston Luzadder, Jos Chalmers, and Adam Liebovitz grew their schools lead with commanding victory over the University of Colorado’s Bill Golembieski, Colt Peterson, Charles Cassin, and Danny Hiller. Thomas Schubert, Logan Luker, Tanner Hurst, and Ryan Sullivan teamed up to take third for Cumberland University. Marian continued to dominate during the women’s team pursuit with Allie Dragoo, Emily Elbers, Jacqueline Kurth, and Corrie Karas winning the gold medal over MSU’s Ashley Weaver, Amber Vredenburg, Claire Routledge, and Jessica Prinner. The Fort Lewis team of Lauren Catlin, Sarah Sturm, Kathryn Ross, and Allerton Johnson grabbed the podium’s third step.

SPRINTS

Matthew Baranoski (Perkasie, PA/Penn State-Lehigh Valley) took his second national title in as many days when he beat out Danny Robertson (Rolling Meadows, IL/Midwestern State University) in the final of the men’s sprint. Although Robertson won the first race by half a bike length, Baranoski was able to come back and win ride #2 before taking a very narrow victory in ride #3. Colton Barrett (North Saint Paul, MN/Marian University) bested Alexander Gil (Hialeah, FL/Florida International University) to win the bronze medal round. Also winning a second Stars-and-Stripes jersey was Madalyn Godby (Louisville, CO/University of Colorado-Colorado Springs) who bested Mandy Marquardt (Breinigsville, PA/Penn State-Lehigh Valley) in the women’s sprint while Stephanie Torres (East Elmhurst, NY/Marian University) beat Colleen Hayduk (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown University of Pennsylvania) for third place.

SCRATCH RACES

After 12 kilometers of racing, Colton Barrett (North Saint Paul, MN/Marian University) rode his way into a Stars-and-Stripes jersey for the men’s scratch race. The race saw plenty of attacks but nobody was able to stay away, and in the end it came down to a group sprint. Barrett bested second and third place finishers Colt Peterson (Huntington Beach, CA/University of Colorado-Boulder) and Zack Allison (Fort Collins , CO/Colorado State University) In the women’s 8-kilometer event, points race champion Colleen Hayduk (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown University of Pennsylvania) continued to show her strength with a win over silver and bronze medalists Jacqueline Kurth (Palm City, FL/Marian University) and Mary Costelloe (Emmaus, PA/Kutztown University of Pennsylvania). The three medalists were in a group of seven that ended up getting away and lapping the field with two laps to go.
