| Cycling glory is back up for grabs as the 2012 USA Pro Challenge departs from Durango, Colorado on August 20, 2012. Several top professionals, including six of the top-13 finishers from this year’s Tour de France, will be on hand for this seven-stage, 683-mile race ending in Colorado’s Capitol city of Denver.
Defending champ, Levi Leipheimer (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) will be challenged by Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale), Cadel Evans (BMC), and reigning U.S. National Road Race Champion Timmy Duggan (Liquigas-Cannondale). The expected remainder of the field includes 123 additional riders and a total of 16 teams.
Tejay Van Garderen (BMC), who placed fifth in the 2012 Tour de France and third in the 2011 USA Pro Cycling Challenge, has to be a pre-race favorite, even above team-leader Evans, who had a less-than-stellar Tour de France. Watch for Ben Jacques-Maynes (Bissell) to not only be in the breakaway groups, but also contend for the lead.
