Cycling as a Team Sport & Winning
"It's true that in the Pro ranks cycling is a team
sport and I think people forget that sometimes. All they see is that you DNF,
they don't see the bottles you get, the riding in the wind you do for the
leaders or chasing for endless kilometres. From what I learnt this year, you
could be a decidedly average rider, but if a whole 8 man team rode for you, you
would be in with a shout at the finish…Look at Cipo in the worlds. He would
never have been able to do that alone. Personally speaking, I can't win pro
races at the moment (it's hard enough to finish!) but if I can work for someone
who can then that's great - I don't care about finishing 25th or 125th. And
neither do the team - they care about winning and the progression of the team…"

Lampre/NGC
Becomes...
Lampre/Farnese Vini
As announced with satisfaction by the Italian wine firm, the Pro Tour team
Lampre has the pleasure to welcome Farnese Vini in blue-fucsia group as
co-sponsor. The italian firm, leader in the production of wines, oils and grappa
of high quality, has chosen to support the team of Saronni starting from
January, 2010.
"Join our brand to a Pro Tour team as Lampre, is a good vehicle to promote
the image of the firm that exports its products in 67 countries - explains the
owner of Farnese Vini Valentino Sciotti - The cycling, indeed, has a strength of
penetration that few other sports can boast. Besides we found in Lampre very
serious managers and other sponsors that share with us the great passion for
this sport".
"I'm sure that the cycling fans will soon accustom to the new name Lampre-Farnese
Vini: in fact, we have all the chance to perform a very good season - Giuseppe
Saronni, general manager of blue-fucsia team, commented - We're proud to rely on
Farnese Vini support, because the choice of sponsorship made by the company
placed in Ortona is a sign of trust towards our performances and our plans for
the futures. I thank Farnese Vini and its owner Valentino Sciotti, with whom
immediately a strong realtionship began".
Team Barloworld Final Glory
Thomas claimed pursuit win in the Manchester velodrome
Team Barloworld Geraint Thomas claimed an outstanding pursuit victory in the
opening UCI Track World Cup event in Manchester on Friday October 30.
Welsh track specialist and team pursuit Olympic gold medalist clocked the
impressive time of 4'15" in the qualifying heat, the second fastest time ever
recorded, behind compatriot Chris Boardman (1996). In the final round,
Barloworld's rider caught his opponent, Dominque Cornu from Belgium, and took
another important gold medal.
Following his individual pursuit win in last week British national
championships, Thomas showed a really good form on home soil and he is now
expected to lead the Brit squad to another gold in the upcoming team pursuit
race.

2009 UCI Best Mountain Bike Events
Nissan MTB World Cup: Offenburg, La Bresse and Mont-Sainte-Anne
Following tradition, all those involved in the Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World
Cup voted for the best events of the 2009 season. The winners are Offenburg
(GER) for cross-country Olympic, La Bresse (FRA) for downhill and
Mont-Sainte-Anne (CAN) for four-cross.
Olympic cross-country: Offenburg once again
For the second year in a row, Offenburg was unanimously voted best XCO event.
The young but smoothly run event is appreciated for its organisation,
spectacular course and its large and enthusiastic crowd. Results for the second
and third place are also the same as last year with Houffalize (BEL) being voted
second and Mont-Sainte-Anne (CAN) third.
DownhillI: La Bresse ousts Fort William
Featuring on the World Cup calendar for the first time this year, the little
French town of Bresse takes first place in front of Fort William (GBR), a
seasoned winner of the downhill trophy. The short and original track in Bresse,
as well as the huge crowd that cheered the riders all week long came as a big
surprise to the mountain bike community. Fort William has to make do with second
place in front of Mont-Sainte-Anne (CAN).
Four-cross: Mont-Sainte-Anne rewarded for its new track
What a change. After years near the bottom of the four-cross votes,
Mont-Sainte-Anne suddenly jumps into first place! With the 2010 UCI Mountain
Bike & Trials World Championships in mind, the organisers Gestev decided to
create a complete new track. Their investment and effort was directly rewarded
with the winning trophy. With another new track and a night-time event,
Schladming (AUT) was voted second and Fort William third.
With one trophy and two third places, Mont-Sainte-Anne is the big winner of
these elections. A good sign for next year’s World Championships! The
riders, teams, journalists, UCI sponsors and the UCI took part in the voting.
UCI
Vaughters, of course has that European experience
too…
"He’s the professor, man, there’s no other way to put it. He’s the professor of
cycling and he has a lot of knowledge on a lot of subjects and the guys can only
respect him, everybody’s excited because a little more opportunity and a LOT
more instruction." Roy Knickman -

UCI Director Sportif Program
Next week the UCI Academy will deliver the first Director Sportif programme at
the World Cycling Centre in Aigle, Switzerland. Since registrations opened in
August, the programme has received widespread support and interest, resulting in
an oversubscription of applicants.
The Academy has developed the tailored management education programme in
consultation with UCI ProTour to further professionalise the sport in line with
UCI ProTour objectives. The week will see Director Sportifs from UCI ProTeams
and UCI Pro Continental Teams come together to undertake specifically designed
workshops, develop practical skills, enhance knowledge sharing throughout the
teams and ultimately assist with the overall global development of the sport – a
key objective of the UCI and the UCI Academy.
Programme Manager Michael Cary commented on the success of the programme to
date in generating such positive feedback and registrations;
“We were confident that this new and exciting programme would be well
received by the UCI ProTeams. It has been developed with a large amount of
industry input so that it addresses real requirements and issues faced by the
Director Sportifs today. We are pleased with the response to date and look
forward to welcoming the Director Sportifs to the World Cycling Centre and
delivering this exciting initiative next week.”
Alain Rumpf (UCI), added: "Next week, 25 Director Sportifs from UCI ProTeams
and UCI Pro Continental Teams will take part in the first Director Sportif
programme at the World Cycling Centre. This constitutes a key step in the
improvement of the quality of professional cycling worldwide, one of the goals
pursued by the UCI ProTour since 2005. Ultimately, anyone who wishes to become a
Director Sportif will have to be in possession of this diploma (by 2013 for UCI
ProTeams and 2015 for UCI Professional Continental Teams).”

Bike Brake Announces the Parking Brake for Your Bike
In September 2009, Bike Brake introduced their new bicycle parking brake for use
on bicycles not equipped with kickstands. Designed with a low profile to remain
on the grip, it is durable, lightweight, and un-obstructive. Bike Brake features
two grab tabs to easily lift and extend around the brake lever to keep the front
wheel from spinning, greatly stabilizing the bicycle when stood upright. Now
available in nine colors Bike Brake fits both road and mountain bikes.
“Bicycles are very expensive and there is always the potential for them to
fall when temporarily parked. This can scratch the bike or often the car it
rests against,” said Kendall Kelsen, President of Bike Brake. “It takes less
time to apply the Bike Brake than to attempt a good bike balance. You can be
confident your bike will stay in place.”
Bike Brake can be used when preparing for a ride, taking a break, performing
maintenance, or storing the bicycle. There is also a theft deterrent factor when
the bicycle is unattended. Bike Brake is distributed through Paceline Products
and can also be purchased online at
