Italian Ex-Pofessional League Championship
Cittiglio (Varese) The birthplace of Alfredo Binda hosted the tenth
edition of the Italian Championship reserved for former professional racing
cyclists. The annual race is organized by Club Ciclisti Ex Professionisti e
Amici dello Sport (Cycling Club Former Professionals and Friends of Sport).
The absolute ruler of the competition was 37 year old, recently retired
Fuji/Servetto rider Daniele Nardello. Nardello riding in his hometown of Varese
was one of five former Italian Road champions (Nardello won in 2001) got his
retirement off to a good start after a successful 15 year career by
winning the race solo.
38 former professionals stepped to the line to try their hand for the
seventeen rounds of the local circuit of just under two miles. The race got
under way with large crowds cheering the champions. Among the most acclaimed, a
true myth: Francesco Prina, 90 years of age, who started and completed the test.
The race started at the Alfredo Binda Museum.
A group of twelve escaped on lap six containing Nardello, Chiapucci and
Zanini. A solo attempt was made by Angelo Lecchi, on the eigth lap but Lecchi
was caught by Nardello on Lap 11. Nardello and Lecchi worked in agreement
gaining a few seconds over chasers: Chiappucci, Tosi, Santeroni and Loda. On the
penultimate lap Nardello left his conpanion and was in command to the finish,
while Lecchi was caught by the pursuers.
Nardello won solo; twenty seconds later Tosi and Chiappucci fought a fierce
sprint and finished in that order.
Other former winners of the Italian championship tricolor jersey in
attendance were: Angelo Tosi, Santeroni Walter, Bruno Colombo, and Francesco
Lucchesi.

The finish celebrated by highlighting the presentation of the champions'
uniforms that will be given to all members of a charity ride that Nardello with
Zanini and other professionals and former professionals preparing for the 8
December in Brinzio (Varese). During the podium ceremonies special awards were
given to: Gianni Bugno, Claudio Chiappucci, Stefano Zanini, Francesco Prina e
and Fico d’India Bruno Arena, who rode a good race.
Earlier in the day a two up time trial for the women was won by Laura Bozzolo
and Bruna Cancelli who won with over a minutes margin over Edita Pucinskaite and
Marilisa Giucolsi. Sigrid Coneo and Laura Caldiroli finished third.
The darling of the house Noemi Cantele riding with Raffaella Micheletti took
fourth.
Diana Ziliute, one of the greatest cyclists of the last 10 years, was joined
at the start by Morena Tartaglia, The Ziliute will return to Cittiglio on March
28, 2010, for the first World Cup of the year staged as always by the Cycling
Sport Promotion Mario Minervino.

Vittoria di Daniele Nardello
Cittiglio (Varese) Il paese natale di Alfredo Binda ha ospitato la decima
edizione del Campionato Italiano riservato ai corridori ciclisti ex
professionisti. Sono stati in 38 ex professionisti a cimentarsi sul circuito di
poco meno di due chilometri, da ripetere per diciassette volte. Il dominatore
assoluto della competizione è risultato Daniele Nardello che nelle ultime
tornate ha fatto valere la sua freschezza atleti distanziando tutti gli altri
contendenti.
Sul traguardo il varesino di Dovese di Arcisate ha festeggiato mettendo in
evidenza la maglia della “Pedala con i Campioni” , la divisa che verrà data a
tutti gli iscritti della pedalata a scopo benefico che Nardello con Zanini ed
altri professionisti ed ex professionisti organizzeranno il prossImo 8 dicembre
a Brinzio (Varese). Gli altri ex tricolori sono risultati: Angelo Tosi, Walter
Santeroni, Bruno Colombo e Francesco Lucchesi.
